The Grenada Villa Book
The Caribbean
The beautiful island of Grenada is a deservedly popular holiday destination, with its friendly welcoming people and its warm climate. Situated 100 miles north of Venezuela and 150 miles south of Barbados, Grenada is the southernmost of the Windward Islands and enjoys average temperatures of 26 – 30C all year long. Just 21 miles long and 12 miles wide, with a population of around 100,000, the island has an extraordinary variety of landscapes, with a central mountain range, tropical rainforests, waterfall filled gorges and stunning beaches. Offshore is equally beautiful, the diving ranking among the finest in the Caribbean, with numerous reefs and wrecks to explore, and around 15 species of whales and dolphins to be seen.

Grenada was first sighted by Christopher Colombus in 1498, then changed hands between the British and the French several times between 1609 and 1783, when the Treaty of Versailles awarded it to the British. Grenada achieved independence from Britain in 1974 but it government and legal system is still modelled on the British system. Both French and British influences can be seen in town and street names and, although English is the main language, French words are often heard in the patois. Electricity is 220 volts with UK style, 3 square pin plugs. Driving is on the left and a visitor’s driving licence is available on presentation of a current, full driving licence from most jurisdictions for a small payment. The local currency is Eastern Caribbean Dollars, but US$ and £ sterling are widely accepted.

There are direct flights to Grenada from the U.K with British Airways, Virgin and Golden Caribbean, and Excel has weekly direct flights from London's Gatwick Airport. BWIA has daily direct flights from London's Heathrow Airport to Antigua, Barbados, St. Lucia and Trinidad, with same day connections via LIAT and Caribbean Star into Grenada. In the US, Air Jamaica and American Eagle continue to service Grenada with direct flights from New York / Montego Bay and Puerto Rico respectively, while BWIA operates regularly scheduled flights via its Trinidad hub. In Canada, Air Canada Vacations operates a weekly service from Toronto to Grenada during the Winter season (December to April) with easy connections from Halifax, Montreal and Ottawa. Year round, Air Canada and BWIA operate regularly scheduled flights from Toronto and Montreal to Barbados and Trinidad respectively, with connections into Grenada via LIAT and Caribbean Star. LIAT and Caribbean Star continue to provide connections into Grenada's Point Salines International Airport, from various Caribbean islands along with connections to International flights from Antigua, Barbados, St. Lucia and Trinidad.
