Trujillo, an important Spanish 13th century medieval town of great architectural and historical importance, is situated in the heart of the Extremadura, 250 kms to the south-west of Madrid. Bordered by Portugal to the west, the Gredos mountain range to the north, Andalusia to the south, and Castile to the east, Extremadura is one of the most spectacular provinces of inland Spain, with unspoilt cities and villages, bearing evidence of its Roman, Moorish and Medieval history. Illustrious historical figures linked with the town include Francisco Pizarro, founder of Lima and conqueror of Peru, Francisco de Orellana, discoverer of the Amazon, and Francsico de las Casas, one of the first settlers in Mexico.
Set above the main square, Plaza Mayor, is the Medieval part of Trujillo known as the ‘Villa’ (a Roman town encompassed by a fortified wall), crowned by a large castle. Here, atmospheric narrow, cobbled streets wind past 16th century houses and palaces and semi-fortified towers. This is the setting for the spacious family home we have for rent here, which originally formed part of a 15th century palace. It is just a five minute walk to the city centre and its excellent bars, restaurants and shops, and wonderful Thursday market. There is also a good supermarket close by.
The property has a totally secluded garden, on two levels, high above street level with uninterrupted views over the countryside towards Portugal and the Gredos mountains. It is filled with mature shrubs and borders and includes lawns and terraces. On the lowest level is a fan-shaped enclosed swimming pool (3.5 x 4.50m), fully tiled with decorative borders. Within the gardens is a fully automatic watering system and garden floodlighting.
The accommodation is all on one level with impressive reception rooms, high ceilings and a wealth of detailed original stone features and cornice work. The ground floor rooms open to private terraces, furnished for relaxing and dining outdoors. Amenities include central heating, telephone, satellite television, DVD, CD player, and intercom system. The property is best suited for 6 adults and 2 children (over the age of 8 years).
