This fabulous and unique property, dating from the late 17th Century, is the only villa on the island of Torcello. The real precursor of Venice, Torcello was originally settled between the 5th and 7th Centuries, becoming the most prosperous of the early lagoon communities with its own palaces, churches, shipyards and docks, its own nobility and laws. The growth of Venice brought about its demise and its current population is only about 100 people. It is probably most famous now for the Locanda Cipriani, one of the gastronomic institutions of the Veneto.
San Giovanni takes its name from the Romanesque church of San Giovanni, some of whose ruins have been restored by the International Save Venice Fund, and which can still be admired in the enormous garden surrounding the villa. The interior of the villa was also restored a few years ago and the rooms are beautifully furnished with antiques.
There is a swimming pool (14 x 7m) within the grounds, on a small hill overlooking the garden. The property also comes with a small boat, with driver, who is at clients’ disposal from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. for trips to many of the nearby islands, including Burano, famous for its lace, and Murano, famous for its glass. Central Venice can be reached by vaporetto or taxi, or by your own boat, subject to the driver’s other duties.
