This typical Aeolian house is located at Lingua, in the area of Santa Marina, on the island of Salina. It is a relatively flat part of the island, so makes for easy countryside walks among the olive groves and vineyards, where the local sweet Malvasia wine is produced. The famous Aeolian capers are also grown in abundance here. Salina so far has escaped mass tourism, its quiet, tranquil atmosphere and easy going way of life, making it ideal for a peaceful and relaxing holiday. The local population is warm and welcoming, with most people going about their daily lives (farming and fishing) as they have for centuries. Characterized by its two extinct volcanoes, Salina is nevertheless the greenest and most fertile of the Aeolian islands Hikers will enjoy walking in the forests of Monte Fossa delle Felci (one of the first natural parks created in Sicily), and also its neighbour the Monte dei Porri, with breathtaking panoramic views over the sea and the other islands of the archipelago.
A bus line connects the three main villages, but visitors can also hire a car, scooter or bicycle. One of the most beautiful places to visit is Pollara, the crater of the youngest volcano on the island. Don’t miss a trip to the beach near here, the setting for the film ‘Il Postino’. Once you have negotiated the climb down, the view of the beach with its steep cliff backdrop is really stunning. Also not far from here is Punta Perciato (the pierced point), a huge natural arch rising some 50 metres above the sea surface, originally erupted from the Pollara volcano. Salina can be accessed by an almost hourly hydrofoil service from Milazzo, via Lipari, during the summer months. There are also hydrofoil or ferry services from Messina, Palermo, Reggio Calabria and Naples.
Our property here is one of the very few houses with direct access to the sea, Situated in a little rocky bay where boats can be moored, guests can also swim safely in the clear, blue sea. The view from the terraces is stunning, with the blue sea contrasting with the surrounding bougainvillea vines. There is a small garden where capers are also grown. The accommodation is on several levels and the interiors have been furnished with attention and care. Amenities include a television and stereo.
