This historically fascinating castle is situated in the hamlet of Vaglio Serra in a panoramic position overlooking the hills and valleys below. As well as its hilltop castles, the region is known for its wines, truffles and chocolates, and includes the cities of Asti. Alba, Nizza Monferrato and Canelli. It is an area rich in wineries and gourmet restaurants and there are many historical feasts and re-enactments, including the famous Palio d’Asti. The closest town, Nizza Monferrato, 3.5 kms from the property, offers a variety of shops and restaurants, a weekly open-air market and an antiques market every third Sunday of the month. The town of Bra, where the international ‘Slow Food’ organisation has its base, is also nearby. The Ligurian coast is only an hour’s drive and the capital of Piedmont, Turin, is 100 kms away.
Founded in 200 B.C., the hamlet was originally a garrison to protect the Roman road which passed through it. Castello Stella dates back to 1400 and is protected by the Italian Arts Commission. An ancient wooden balustrade runs along its façade, and the square tower is evidence of its initial military purpose. The accommodation has been divided in two parts with different owners. The part of the castle we offer for rent is owned by a young architect who specializes in the restoration of ancient buildings.
Access to the property is from a huge wooden portal which opens into the private garden with swimming pool (6 x 4m). The accommodation is on two floors, with a living room on each floor. The floors are all in original cotto and the ancient ceiling frescoes have also been retained. The owner is waiting for authorisation from the Arts Commission to restore these to all their original glory. The rooms are comfortably furnished, including some antique pieces. Amenities include satellite TV, telephone, central heating, washing machine and baby cot.
