Destination Guide
At less than one hour drive north-east of Rome, is the Sabina region. Untouched by mass tourism, its hilly landscape is covered with olive trees, forests of oaks, medieval villages, monasteries and castles. Our property here is situated close to the medieval town of Cantalupo. The original castle here was transformed in the 17th century to the Palazzo Cammucini, a private museum. There are many activities on offer for those with historical, artistic or natural interests. Monte Soratte offers wonderful nature walks, and there is horse riding and golf available within an easy drive of the property. The nearby Abbey of Farfa, dating from 680 is inhabited by the Benedictine order, and its village workshops, famous during the Renaissance, have been brought back to life by artisans and merchants, giving the town a characteristic and lively atmosphere. At the Church of Santa Maria here, you can admire the ‘Last Judgement’, an oil fresco dating back to 1571, among the many art works, archeological pieces, manuscripts and engravings at the monumental abbey complex. For those interested in food and wine, tasting the famous “Sabina Olive Oil” is a must. Owing to the temperate climate and the southern exposure of the region, the quality of the oil has always been maintained to the highest standard, and the extra virgin olive oil produced in Sabina was among the first in Italy to obtain the protected domination of origin. Also within an easy drive are Civita Castella, Lake Bracciano, Terni, rieti, Viterbo and Orvieto. Rome is just 55 kilometres away, and the train station at Poggio Mirteto Scalo, 7 kilometres away from the property, means that day trips to Rome can be made easily.
