The Palazzo Pitti, situated in the Oltrarno, just a few minutes walk from the Ponte Vecchio and the Arno, was the Medici power base from which Tuscany was ruled from 1550 for three hundred years. Over the years the size of the palace was increased and the Boboli Gardens laid out in the land around it, both of which remain one of the principal attractions of Florence today.
