Dating from 1878, this beautiful traditional two-storey Santorini mansion is situated in the heart of the picturesque village of Megalochori. Just 9 kilometres from Fira, Megalochori is also within easy reach of Akrotiri and many of the island’s beaches. Surrounded by vineyards, much of the island’s wine is produced here, including the traditional sweet vinsanto. There are also several good tavernas in the village.
Once owned by one of the most powerful families on the island, the vinsanto produced here was exported to Russia at the turn of the century and, until the Russian Revolution, used by the Russian Orthodox church for Holy Communion. The original structure of the mansion has now been very sensitively renovated to its original splendour, retaining the layout and traditional features. At the turn of the century, the first floor would have been occupied by the family, with the ground floor serving as the winery and cellar.
The property is accessed from the main village square, up a small winding road. Entrance is into a large cobbled private courtyard, with swimming pool (5 x 6m), pool loungers and umbrella, and an outdoor dining area. The accommodation comprises two spacious self-contained units. The first floor unit opens to large terraces with views over the village, while the ground floor unit, once the wine cellar, still has the cylindrical troughs sunk into the ground which were used for distilling the vinsanto and now provide an unusual lighting feature. The rooms are very tastefully decorated and furnished with fine antique pieces. Amenities include satellite TV, DVD and I-pod. The internet can be used at our local office in Megalochori. The property sleeps up to 10 people and would be ideal for a large group of friends, or two families wanting to travel together. Minimum stay is 3 nights. Transfers from/to Santorini port or airport, as well as a rental car are included in the rental. A welcome hamper awaits you on arrival and our local concierge service is available during your stay to advise on what to do, where to eat, and any other information you may require. Meals can also be delivered for breakfasts, light lunches or dinners from a traditional Greek cafe in the main square.
