The Gozo Villa Book
Gozo
With a history dating back 7000 years, Gozo bears evidence to its fascinating and often turbulent past, with its prehistoric temples (the oldest freestanding structure in the world), its ancient citadel and its Arab place names. It is said that Ulysses spent some years here, followed by virtually every major power of its time – Greeks, Romans, Phoenicians, Arabs, French, Spaniards and English have ruled and fought over this tiny island, just 14 x 7 kms in size. The atmosphere there today is quiet, peaceful and friendly, cut off from the larger and busier island of Malta, yet with plenty of activities to satisfy most holidaymakers.

All our properties are old farmhouses dating back over 200 years, very tastefully renovated with their character and traditional features intact. Many are situated either in or on the outskirts of one of the villages, making it easy to purchase supplies and also to enjoy the good variety of restaurants and cafes. Local life is very much centred around the main piazza and the village church. Throughout the summer ‘festas’ take place in a different village every weekend in honour of the patron saint to whom the parish is dedicated. These colourful ‘festas’ encompass illuminations, bands, a procession, horse and donkey races and fireworks.

The sea is only 10 minutes away from anywhere on the island. Beautifully clear, it is paradise for snorkellers and divers, and there are several excellent diving schools. Other activities include fishing, wind surfing, cycling and walking. There are a number of designated walks and it is a great way of seeing the countryside and the many sites of archaeological and historical interest. Sailing is also popular with its perfect weather conditions, and clear seas. Beaches vary from the red sand beaches of Ramla and San Blas to livelier resorts like Masalforn, pebble bays and intriguing caves at Mgarr, the fishing village of Xlendi and the renowned rock formations and Azure Window at Dwejra.

Arrival in Gozo is via Malta, then a 25 minute ferry trip across the 5 km strip of Mediterranean Sea, or a short (15 minute) helicopter trip. For ferry transfers, clients will be met by our representatives at the airport, then escorted to the ferry. They will have the choice whether to continue with the taxi transfer for the ferry (meaning that luggage can remain in the car) or to travel independently for the crossing and have another transfer arranged to Gozo to escort them to the villa. A car is essential during your stay and this can be delivered direct to your villa on arrival.
